ABOUT MKC
The Maui Kitesurf Community is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting your right to kite Maui’s waters.
The Maui Kitesurf Community (MKC) was formed to promote kitesurfing safety and preserve access for kitesurfing in Maui. The MKC holds the FAA Waiver which allows kiteboarding on Maui’s North Shore within the FAA controlled Airport Zone.
Under the responsibilities of the waiver, the MKC has a duty to inform the public of the waiver’s conditions, and rules that apply to kiteboarders. The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) controls the Airspace within a 5 mile radius of all major US airports. The FAA has regulations that specifically relate to and address kite flying, and forbid it within the 5 mile zone.
The FAA has issued a Waiver to MKC that allows some restricted kiteboarding activities, within certain areas. Without this FAA Waiver, all kiteboarding would be banned within a five mile radius of the Kahului Airport (OGG), which would mean all of Kanaha and Lanes.

Lance Whitney
I’ve been on Maui since 2002 and have been very active in the kiting community since then. I may be the only original member of the board. I started windsurfing in the 70’s and kiting in the late 90’s. I’m 64 y.o. and I still manage to keep the stoke factor high by participating in the newest water activities, especially as it relates to kites. I’m exclusively using a foil for kiting, and, now, surfing. My wife, Anya, has joined me in this passion for foils so together we spend a lot of hours in the north shore waters.

Hi, I’m Steve Sadler Maui has been my home since 1977 first for surfing, then windsurfing, and for the last 10 years, kitesurfing. Beach access has has always been a priority for me, and diplomacy between groups is best accomplished with a group of skilled, like minded people like my friends at MKC. These people tirelessly work with other interested groups to keep our beaches clean, safe, and open for all to enjoy!
